The experience of the average person

May 6, 2011

In this brilliant book, Peter Englund gives a realistic picture of what World War One was like – by putting together the personal experience of a number of different people from all over the world who were all affected by the war. The focus is the micro-history. Historical events seen through it’s “atoms” – the personal experiences.

I want to encourage any existing or aspiring author out there to use this format for non-fictional history writing. It is brilliant and it gives a picture of what it was really like.

I’d like someone to take an initiative of writing a book like this about the holocaust. There are many many personal stories, and Yad vaShem is making sure to collect as many as possible, and hundreds of survivors (including my grandfather) have written books about their experiences. The material is there. We just need the author.
